Starting a business, buying equipment, meeting operating expenses and expanding production all need capital, and arranging it is a common difficulty for MSMEs. The Government of India addresses this through different forms of support, including institutional credit, credit guarantees, margin-money subsidies, skill development and market access. The number of enterprises that can benefit is large. As of 30 June 2026, over 8.84 crore enterprises had registered on the Udyam Registration Portal and the Udyam Assist Platform, according to the Ministry of MSME.

This article describes government schemes for MSMEs that serve different needs: the Credit Guarantee Scheme (CGTMSE), the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) and the PM Vishwakarma Scheme. Not every scheme provides a direct loan or a cash subsidy. Some give a guarantee to the lender, and others work through banks.

Which Government Schemes Can MSMEs Use for Funding?

1. Credit Guarantee Scheme for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE)

CGTMSE was set up by the Government of India and SIDBI. It helps eligible micro and small enterprises access institutional credit by giving a credit guarantee to participating lenders.

  • It reduces the lender’s risk on eligible credit facilities.
  • It can support eligible term loans and working capital facilities.
  • It is designed to facilitate credit without collateral security or third-party guarantees, subject to the scheme’s conditions.

The borrower applies through a participating bank or financial institution. CGTMSE does not lend directly. The guarantee protects the lender under the scheme, and it does not cancel the borrower’s obligation to repay. Government announcements in 2025 reported that the guarantee cover ceiling was doubled to ₹10 crore, but the current guarantee coverage, credit limits and fees should be verified on the official CGTMSE website.

2. Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)

PMEGP supports eligible entrepreneurs who set up new micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector, through bank-linked finance and a government margin-money subsidy.

  • Eligible new manufacturing and service enterprises can be set up under it.
  • The applicant is expected to make an own contribution towards the project cost.
  • Subsidy rates depend on the location of the project and the category of the beneficiary.
  • Applications are processed through the designated implementing agencies and participating banks.

3. PM Vishwakarma Scheme

PM Vishwakarma is designed for eligible traditional artisans and craftspeople working in specified trades. The support includes:

  • Collateral-free enterprise development loans, released in instalments.
  • Toolkit incentives.
  • Skill training and training stipends.
  • Incentives for eligible digital transactions.
  • Marketing and business development support.

The published scheme framework provides credit support of up to ₹3 lakh in two tranches, subject to eligibility and milestone requirements. SIDBI explains the application process in its blog at https://www.sidbi.in/blog/how-to-apply-for-pm-vishwakarma-scheme

What Other Indian Government Schemes for MSMEs Support Growth?

1. Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY)

MUDRA loans support eligible micro-enterprises in manufacturing, trading and services. The loans fall into four categories: Shishu, Kishore, Tarun and Tarun Plus. The category depends on the loan amount and on eligibility. Tarun Plus, for example, is for entrepreneurs who have successfully repaid a previous Tarun loan. SIDBI’s blog on applying for a MUDRA loan is at https://www.sidbi.in/blog/how-to-apply-for-pm-mudra-loan-online.

2. Procurement and Marketing Support Scheme

The Ministry of MSME’s Procurement and Marketing Support Scheme helps eligible micro and small enterprises improve their access to markets through activities such as trade fairs, exhibitions and buyer-seller meets.

3. MSME Sustainable (ZED) Certification

The Zero Defect Zero Effect (ZED) certification initiative helps eligible MSMEs improve product quality, manufacturing processes and environmental performance. Eligible enterprises can explore the support available under it.

Which MSME Scheme Is Suitable for Your Business?

No scheme is best for every business. The suitable option depends on the business activity, the purpose of the funding, the applicant’s eligibility and the current conditions of the scheme.

For Businesses That Need Collateral-Free Credit

Eligible micro and small enterprises that seek bank finance without collateral may look into CGTMSE through a participating lender.

For Entrepreneurs Starting a New Business

PMEGP is an option to investigate when establishing an eligible new micro-enterprise and seeking bank-linked finance with subsidy support.

For Traditional Artisans and Craftspeople

PM Vishwakarma is intended for eligible artisans in notified traditional trades who need tools, skills, credit and market access.

For Small Businesses Seeking Market Expansion

MUDRA financing and marketing support are options to investigate, depending on what the money is meant for.

Conclusion: Choose the Right Government Support for Your MSME

Government schemes can help MSMEs access credit, establish new enterprises, upgrade tools and improve their access to markets. A business owner should match the funding requirement to the relevant scheme, verify current eligibility and prepare the necessary documents before applying.
