Women who start or grow a business often need to arrange capital, buy equipment and meet operating expenses, usually before the business has built a credit record. A loan for women entrepreneurs is one form of support, but it is not the only one. Support can also include credit guarantees, subsidies, skill development, mentoring and business networking.

This article covers government schemes, bank financing and the support SIDBI provides to women-owned MSMEs. Not every scheme is meant exclusively for women, and eligibility depends on the programme and the circumstances of the business.

Why Do Women Entrepreneurs Need Financial and Development Support?

Women entrepreneurs may encounter several difficulties in obtaining capital. These include a limited business credit history, insufficient collateral, early-stage expenses and delayed customer payments. The experience varies from one entrepreneur to another, and these difficulties do not apply to every woman who runs a business.

Finance alone does not make a business sustainable. Mentoring, financial literacy, digital skills, market access and networking help an entrepreneur use funds effectively, plan repayment and build a business that lasts.

What Loan Schemes Are Available for Women Entrepreneurs in India?

1. Pradhan Mantri MUDRA Yojana (PMMY)

MUDRA loans support eligible micro-enterprises through participating banks, NBFCs and other lending institutions. The loans are grouped into four categories:

  • Shishu: loans up to ₹50,000.
  • Kishore: loans above ₹50,000 and up to ₹5 lakh.
  • Tarun: loans above ₹5 lakh and up to ₹10 lakh.
  • Tarun Plus: loans above ₹10 lakh and up to ₹20 lakh, for eligible entrepreneurs who have successfully repaid a previous Tarun loan.

The loans can support eligible activities in manufacturing, trading and services. PMMY is not exclusively for women, but women entrepreneurs can apply if they meet the requirements. The scheme provides collateral-free institutional credit, subject to the lender’s assessment.

2. Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)

PMEGP is a credit-linked subsidy programme for eligible new micro-enterprises in the non-farm sector. Eligible women beneficiaries come under the special category, for which the published margin-money subsidy rates are 25 per cent in urban areas and 35 per cent in rural areas. The subsidy is governed by the conditions of the scheme. It is not an unconditional cash payment.

3. Stand-Up India and New Entrepreneur Financing Initiatives

Stand-Up India was launched in 2016 to support eligible women and SC/ST entrepreneurs in setting up greenfield enterprises, with composite loans between ₹10 lakh and ₹1 crore. The published period of that scheme ended on 31 March 2025.

The Union Budget 2025-26 announced a new scheme for five lakh first-time women, SC and ST entrepreneurs, with term loans up to ₹2 crore over five years. Its detailed implementation process was still being prepared when this article was written. The earlier ₹10 lakh to ₹1 crore scheme should not be treated as open for new applications. Readers should verify the current status of the new scheme on the official portals of the Department of Financial Services and Stand-Up Mitra.

How Does SIDBI Support Women-Owned MSMEs?

1. SIDBI Financing for Women-Owned Businesses

SIDBI is the principal financial institution for the promotion, financing and development of the MSME sector. Women-owned businesses can explore SIDBI’s direct financing products, or financing through eligible partner institutions that receive SIDBI’s support.

The business requirements that may be eligible include:

  • Machinery and equipment purchases.
  • Business expansion and modernisation.
  • Working capital requirements.
  • Technology upgrades.
  • Eligible new projects and capacity expansion.

These financing options are not exclusive to women. Each product has its own eligibility conditions and current terms, which an applicant must confirm. SIDBI’s machinery finance, working capital and project funding products are described at https://www.sidbi.in

2. Credit Guarantee Support for Women-Led MSMEs

The Credit Guarantee Scheme for Micro and Small Enterprises, operated by the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises (CGTMSE), helps eligible enterprises obtain institutional credit without collateral or third-party guarantee. The Ministry of MSME’s published information reports enhanced guarantee coverage of 90 per cent for women-led micro and small enterprises, along with a 10 per cent concession on the guarantee fee.

The guarantee cover is given to the lending institution under the applicable rules. It is not a grant to the borrower, and it does not mean a loan will be approved automatically. The latest scheme guidelines should be verified before relying on these figures.

3. How to Explore SIDBI Support

A woman entrepreneur can visit SIDBI’s official website to identify relevant financing products. She can then contact SIDBI or a participating lender to confirm eligibility, required documents, repayment conditions and current availability.

What Other Development Support Is Available to Women Entrepreneurs?

a. Training, Mentoring and Business Guidance

Business training, financial planning assistance, management development and mentoring programmes help entrepreneurs prepare better loan proposals and manage their business after funding is received.

b. Women Entrepreneurship Platform (WEP)

The Women Entrepreneurship Platform is a resource for discovering finance, mentorship, networking and business-development opportunities for women entrepreneurs.

Entrepreneurs can search the platform for central schemes, state-specific support, financial institutions and capacity-building opportunities. Programme availability and eligibility differ, so the details of each opportunity should be read before applying.

c. Self-Help Groups and Rural Enterprise Support

Eligible rural women can obtain livelihood and enterprise development support through self-help groups and relevant government programmes. These groups provide a base for savings, credit and small enterprise activity, and members may later move to larger institutional finance.

How Can Women Entrepreneurs Apply for Financial Support?

Step 1 — Identify the Funding Requirement

The requirement should be clear before any application is made. A loan to start a business, a loan to purchase equipment, a working capital loan and a loan to expand an existing enterprise are different needs, and the suitable schemes differ.

Step 2 — Compare Relevant Schemes and Lenders

The applicant should compare eligible loan amounts, interest rates, fees, repayment periods, collateral requirements and any applicable subsidy or credit guarantee.

Step 3 — Prepare a Practical Business Plan

The plan should set out the business model, expected costs, revenue estimates, operating expenses and the capacity to repay.

Step 4 — Submit the Application and Follow Up

The application goes to the relevant bank, participating financial institution, official scheme portal or SIDBI channel. The applicant should verify the current application process before submitting documents or paying any fee.

Conclusion — Choosing the Right Support for Women Entrepreneurs

Women entrepreneurs in India can explore loans, credit guarantees, eligible subsidies, mentoring and business-development resources. A loan for women entrepreneurs should be matched to the needs of the business. Before applying, readers should verify that the scheme is currently available and prepare a realistic business plan.
